New words
It is like something has finally clicked in Grant's head and he is saying all the words that his speech therapist has had him working on for 6 months. Most of the words he use now have something to do with balls, juice, or snack. Today I bought him a new ball and while we were playing with it he got hit in the arm with the ball. And then I hear "bad ball". :-) He says in, out, up, big, my, mine, pink, orange, green, blue, snack, juice, more, and of course ball. Scott says we need to build a small wall in the playroom to keep all his balls together. Right now as soon as he gets up in the morning he goes to the play room and dumps all the balls out of his ball pit. He's also starting to try and say new words so Reagan loves to "teach" him.
Back to the routine...
This week the kids are both back at school after having different spring breaks. They are both soooo happy even though it makes me nervous.
Grant has been having a little trouble sleeping at school. His teacher took him out in the hallway to have a "talk" with him about laying down and being quiet for his friends. Then she asked him if he was ready to go back in and go to sleep. He said 'no' and laughed at her. She seemed very displeased by this. She did tell me that there wasn't anything Grant could do that was too much for her. I had to giggle a little. :-)
Last week while Grant was at school I let Reagan choose what we were going to do. On Tuesday all she wanted to do was watch tv. I could not talk her in to anything else. She wanted to watch tv without Grant bugging her and got to pick her own shows. On Thursday I took Reagan and her friend Julia to a "tea party" at a local restaurant, The Chocolate Covered Strawberry. Julia's mom kept her out of daycare so I could take her. It's a little cafe in an old house and the food is pretty good. They brought the girls drinks out in tea cups and we had chocolate covered strawberries. Reagan wasn't a big fan, but Julia loved it. I heard them talking later and Julia was telling Reagan what they were going to do next time I kept her...

Spring Breaks
The kids have different spring breaks this year. Which is kinda nice that I get to spend a little time with each of them alone. For Grant's we mostly played at home, especially soccer in the house which is one of his favorite things to do right now. Now it's Reagan's week (really just two days Tuesday and Thursday). Today she just wanted to come home and watch TV. TV that she gets to choose and that is not interrupted by her brother. :-) Being a first child I completely understand this, even though I wanted to do something else. I tried to get her to go to the science center and was told "that doesn't seem like much fun mommy." She had her heart set on this even though it's such a beautiful day. We did agree that after we pick Grant up from school at 2pm that we would go to the park for a bit. On Thursday I am keeping her friend Julia so that we can all have a girls day. I'm taking them to lunch at restaurant that almost like a tea party, painting nails, and going to feed the ducks. Reagan is so excited for this.
The weather has been so nice lately and the kids are enjoying the time outside. They were playing on the back porch while I was fixing dinner and I heard them giggling. This is what I found when I went out there.
He was pretending to sleep on her. Sometimes they can be so cute! Right now Reagan is doing things and getting Grant to copy her. And he's actually been doing it. Here they are acting like spiders.
On a good note Grant was evaluated at Vanderbilt for speech today. She also did the short eval for autism and said no. Having only seen him once she wondered a bit about Auditory Processing disorder. And his speech therapist says he has apraxia. His speech therapist going to work with him more on his listening and eye contact (and OT will also). Then if it still seems like a problem he will go for a processing evaluation. It looks like it is a speech problem either on the front end or back end and the treatment is about the same. He's had an EXPLOSION of language this last week, adding about 20 words to his original 10. No temper tantrums since he has started using more words last week... The evaluator today was really impressed with what he knew (could point to) even though he hardly said anything to her except ball!! :-) We are enjoying hearing his little voice.

My cutie pie!
We picked up Reagan's glasses today. Reagan loves them, but Grant is a little confused since he's the only one without any. She says she can see the TV better and it makes her happy.
She picked out these glasses and I think they make her look even more like Scott.

Lab Rat
So Monday Grant had it Occupational Evaluation and scored in about the 35th percentile for most things. This does qualify him for services. The OT therapist said she hopes it will just be a short time because he's not too far behind. So right now in addition to OT once a week we have speech twice a week and his early interventionist comes once a week. 4 hours a week of therapy.
His pediatrician wanted him to have a behavioral evaluation to find out what's really going on with him. So I called to make the appointment only to find out that there is a 4-6 month waiting list. Later I was talking to a friend who has been going through the exact same stuff with her son. She had his evaluation done in 3 weeks by signing him up for a study at Vanderbilt. They just do follow up visits every couple of months for 16 months. And best of all you don't have to pay anything for the evaluation. So I called and he has an appointment for the evaluation April 7th. They are checking to make sure the cerebral ataxia (when he quit walking) eliminates him from the study. I should know for sure within the next couple of days. My friend also got her son into a speech study that offers free speech therapy. I called about this and Grant has the evaluation on March 21st.
So I've made Grant into a lab rat, but hopefully we can get all this stuff worked out so that he will be right on track before he goes to school.
On a good note he is trying to talk a lot and has said his first 2 word phase. "blue ball" He says there is one at school. He actually calls most balls blue ball because it's the only color he can comfortably say. :-)

Glasses and new words
So Wednesday I had to take Reagan to Vanderbilt for her eye appointment. I wanted to take her up there since she isn't always 100% sure about her letters and I wanted someone who was familiar with kids. The place was great and it even had free valet parking! Reagan actually got to be in a study using a new tool like the one she was tested with at school that referred her there. She really enjoyed having it done and that fact that it was just her and I. (Scott stayed home with Grant and took him to gymnastics.) After all that we found out she does need glasses. One eye is 20/40 and the other 20/50. She doesn't have to wear them all the time if she doesn't want to, but at school and watching TV it would be helpful.
We took her today to pick out her glasses. She was such a diva picking them out. Scott was getting his eyes examined and we had to wait for him, but she had 6 pairs picked out and want to know why she couldn't get more than one pair. :-) She finally settled on a pair of purple/pink ones and should have them in 2 weeks. They had to be sent off to be made since they are so small. She's pretty excited about it since her cousins (Garret and Chris) have them too.
Grant is repeating a ton of stuff we are saying. He's so cute trying to name colors for everything. For a couple months it has only color he has known is blue. He says everything is blue, but today he started saying orange. Not really orange, but his version of orange. He even suprised his speech therapist. He's also been saying some animal sounds neigh, neigh and moo. He's babbling all the time now and we are cherishing every moment of it. It seems weird to be so excited about this stuff when he is almost 2 1/2, but it really is exciting to us!
