So we knew it was gonna happen because he has gotten out of the playpen before...Grant learned how to get out of the crib. He got out one night, in the middle of the night and got all the way to our room and climbed into our bed. We didn't even hear him. We decided that he was gonna have to go into a big boy bed because we didn't want to risk him getting hurt. So just a few weeks after he lost this bed for getting out and goofing off, Scott had to bring it back down from the attic. He was so happy. He does come out right after we put him to bed but after putting him back a time or two he goes to sleep. We did have to turn around the lock on his door because he knows how to open the child locks (which Reagan can't do). When we go to bed we lock the door so can't get out.
At nap the other day I went in to get him up. I unlocked the door and opened it only to hit Grant in the head. During nap he had gotten up, turned on the light, and laid down with his flower turtleneck blanky behind the door. A couple times at bedtime we have seen the light go on and also hit him with the door when we go in and he has his pillow or stuffed animal (a sheep) behind the door.
When he moved to the big boy bed he decided he needed a pillow and chose this pink princess pillow. It has all 5 princesses on it. He loves it. He does sleep with a lot of things; that princess pillow, the turtleneck blanky, a winky (receiving blanket), a blanket, a ball pillowcase that came with his sheets and comforter, the comforter, and the sheep. And of course they each belong in certain place.
Here he is on his first night...

More than a 2 year old...
Grant had his evaluation at Vanderbilt. It was a long 3 hours, but I had been waiting so long for these answers. After going through our entire history and a lot of testing, that Grant thought was playing, we got our answers. The psychologist told us she could see how we got there and why we have concerns. It was such a relief that they could actually see what I was talking about. She said that if they only evaluated Autism by a child's behavior then Grant would have failed just about every aspect. Luckily autism is also evaluated on a social scale. This is where Grant shines. As we all know he is a very social kid and loves people. He did not hit any of the markers on that scale.
The dr said that except for autism they don't really give a child a diagnosis at this age because so much can change between age 2 and 3. (Because we are in a study we will go back after his 3rd birthday for another evaluation.) His temper tantrums; his insistence on a rigid routine; things having a specific place; and his daily (for lack of a better word) irritability are the major behavior problems we have. The dr said a lot of this is a sign of anxiety in a young child. What is behind this anxiety? We don't know yet, but dealing with the behaviors are our biggest problems. A problem we alone haven't been able to find a way around. I don't want to change Grant because he's an amazing little boy, but it's hard having someone screaming at you all day.
The problems Grant have are even more compounded with the language delay. Even though on paper testing he comes out average you can tell by listening to him that it takes a lot of work for him to get his words out. He has to think about everything and when he's frustrated he always goes back to nonverbal actions. Even she is a bit worried about him losing speech through the school next year because he might not keep up with the progress he is gaining. Dr said he will probably have some trouble starting kindergarten because of this and his rigidness about his routine.
On the cognitive testing he tested almost a year older than his age and the social was about 6 months above his chronological age. So this is great to hear, even though we know that Grant is one smart little booger.
The dr praised us for our work with the speech and the occupational because she could see how much that has helped him already. She did also suggest that we see a behavioral psychologist to help us work on or at least find a way around the behaviors. It has to be a pain to feel unhappy as much as he is so we are very willing to do this. We will go to Vanderbilt for this and after they get a plan of action together they will try to find someone closer to us to keep working with him. If they can't find one up here we will have to keep traveling to Vanderbilt.
I did ask about the ball obsession. The dr laughed and said he is defiantly atypical with the fondness (or complete love) of balls. She did say that right now we have bigger fish to fry with him and to try and use the balls to our advantage. He may grow out of it, he may not, but we can worry about that later.
There was so much to remember but we will get the written report in about a week, so if I forgot anything I will post it then. So no, the temper tantrums are not a normal 2 year old and he would not have just started talking one day, it's still going to be a lot of work for him. Mommy's always know best!

Some funny things
There are so many things the kids do that crack me up I thought I would post a few.
We bought Grant a new bedding set for his big boy bed. It's pretty cute with a bunch of balls all over them. He got all the bedding taken away when Scott put the bed away. Grant insisted on keeping the pillow case though. He doesn't have a pillow in his crib so he lays in it like he does his blankets. He calls it his "ball winky." When we go his his room in the morning/after nap he has to tell us what all the balls are, soccer ball, baseball, basketball, football. Reagan still sleeps with her fitted Wiggles sheet. My kids are crazy.
Grant asked his first question the other day. He said "bracelets are?" He was looking for his favorite bracelets. Reagan tells us funny things all the time. She is so serious about what she wants to tell us too. The other day she was watching Berenstain Bears and kept coming out of the playroom to tell me what was going on like it was as important to me as it was her.
Today was cow appreciation day at Chick fil A. If you dress up like a cow you get a free meal. The kids were so happy to do this. We have done it the last few years. Today Reagan told me that it was one of her favorite holidays right after Halloween and Christmas.
Tomorrow we are going to Lowes to build a tow truck then some yard work. Not the most exciting weekend, but the kids love to just play outside while we work.

Seeing the trains, FINALLY
Well I forgot I hadn't posted this so I am going backward a few days...
On Thursday June 30th we went to Cheekwood to see the trains. We had to go there on Thursday or lose our free pass. It was pretty neat, smaller than I expected, but the kids liked it.
Grant totally loved the trains. Everything was made by hand. Though Grant was most excited to see Thomas and Percy. He loved that their eyes moved back and forth.
After we looked at the trains we went and looked at the flowers.
It was really hot though, mid 90's. Grant decided it was too hot to walk and wanted a ride.
We only ended up staying an hour and a half because it was so hot. Then we headed to a toy store near there. We plan on going back to Cheekwood when it is cooler so daddy can go and we can spend the whole morning watching the trains.

4th of July
We all know the 4th is mine and Scott's anniversary. This one made 11 years! This year we decided to do something sans kids. Scott's mom offered to keep them overnight. After silently giggling because she has no idea what she's getting into with Grant we readily accepted. For our anniversary Scott bought us tickets to a concert. Who you ask? Well none other than 80's rock hair bands, Motley Crue and Poison! We dropped the kids off at Grandma's and headed downtown to my favorite restaurant, the Melting Pot. Afterward we walked to the concert. It was an amazing show and we loved it. Poision sounded great and Motley Crue put on an amazing light show. This picture does not do it justice...
After the concert we went to my favorite bar, Cadillac Ranch. I know I don't drink, but I do have a favorite bar. Every time I have been in there someone is dancing all crazy and it cracks me up. It just has a great atmosphere. It was a late night for these old people so we slept in a little the next morning before we went to get the kids.
We got to Grandma's at 10am. When we walked in we could see how tired Grandma looked. She said that Grant woke up poopy at 3am. She got up and changed him. She said she tried everything she could think of, but could not get him back to sleep until 5am. Reagan slept through the whole thing. Grant only slept for an hour and woke everyone up for good at 6am. Everyone was really tired. When we got them home they went to bed for nap. We had to wake them both up after 4 hours! Scott had been telling Grant that this needed to go well since I was Grant's first time sleeping over. I don't think Grant listened.
Since Reagan is afraid of fireworks we didn't even try to go see them. Maybe next year...
